However, the plot is based on a serious theme of destructive relationships tied only to sex. John gets whatever he wants from his mistress. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is approaching an emotional breakdown.

Director David Cronenberg is known for his horror films The Fly and Videodrome. His love for exploring the most hidden traits of human nature allowed him to create a very emotional painting dedicated to passion and dangerous fetishes.

This only directorial project by Joseph Gordon-Levitt may seem like a simple erotic film full of many love scenes with Scarlett Johansson. However, it reveals a relevant topic today: the obsession of many people with porn, which gives more pleasure than real sex.

At first glance, the film may seem like a standard horror movie about a monster that can change its appearance. But director David Robert Mitchell knowingly focused on sex as a way to get a curse. So he talks about promiscuous relationships and sexually transmitted diseases. The creepy monster can be considered the best advertisement for protected sex and contraception.

This provocative painting by the famous Lars von Trier balances on the brink of high art and porn. In Joe's life, everything is tied to sex, but through him the heroine learns both love and betrayal. In fact, both parts are a single whole, they divided the film just for the sake of convenient timing.

They meet regularly, allowing themselves what they cannot do in ordinary life. Gradually, Jeanne gets tired of such a relationship and tries to end it.

Another example of a story where the connection between the heroes rests only on sex and eventually breaks down because of this. Bernardo Bertolucci set himself the task of showing scenes of violence as realistically as possible. It even spoiled his relationship with the leading actors: Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider.

13. 40-year-old virgin

In contrast to other films from the selection, the life of the main character of this comedy has nothing to do with sex at all. But gradually the viewer is led to an interesting conclusion: at 40, it is already much more difficult to start an intimate relationship than in adolescence.

New acquaintances grow closer, and then Ann learns that Graham gets sexual satisfaction only from watching videotapes with frank confessions of women.

Stephen Soderbergh's painting through the sexual problems of the characters tells about human complexes and closeness. It's not for nothing that videotapes are the only example where people don't lie about their feelings. And by the way, this is the third film in the selection, where one of the main roles was played by James Spader, who also starred in "Car Crash" and "Secretary".

11. Bitter moon

In this film, Roman Polanski shows how a once-in-love woman from resentment can become a vengeful sadist, turning her spouse into a toy.

But when an outside perspective is added to the narrative, it becomes clear how cruel Erica's perversions are and how dangerous it is for her loved ones.

Paul Thomas Anderson's film provides a peek behind the scenes of the porn industry. Here, as in ordinary life, they are jealous, scandalous and even commit crimes motivated by passion. It is interesting that the picture is filled with many visual references to the classics of cinema: from "Nice Guys" by Martin Scorsese to "I am Cuba" by Mikhail Kalatozov.

An erotic thriller by one of the most famous Korean directors, Park Chang-uk, pleases with an unpredictable plot. The entire action in the film is mixed with passion and love: Suk Hee's sincere attraction is contrasted with the insidious plans of her accomplice.

Through the sexual attraction of the protagonist, the film tells about the search for the meaning of life, and about the dullness of everyday life of most people. The plot can be interpreted in completely different ways. This is partly why American Beauty became one of the major film events of 1999 and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
