Pycnoscelus nigra
Pycnoscelus nigra
Family - Giant cockroaches
Appearance
A larger cockroach, the higher the species from the genus Pycnoscelus, grows up to 2-2.2 centimeters. On the dorsal side, the cockroach is colored black, the legs are brown.
Habitat
In nature
Inhabits forest litter, loves to bury itself.
It feeds on rotten leaves and wood.
Reproduction
Reproduction by parthenogenesis. Usually viviparous, the ootheca is kept inside until the nymphs hatch. As a rule, hatching of larvae occurs in the dark. Stress or other factors can lead to premature shedding of the ooteca by the female, which can result in non-viability of the eggs. The ootheca is 9 × 3.5 × 2.5 mm in size and contains 30-36 eggs arranged in two rows. The remains of the ootheca are usually quickly eaten by newborn nymphs.
Keeping in captivity
It is better to keep black pycnoscellus in a plastic container with a secure lid with latches and ventilation. At the bottom you need to pour a thick layer of earth, where insects will burrow. Keeping on sawdust in a glass terrarium with good ventilation did not bring the desired effect, because rapid evaporation of moisture leads to drying out, dusting of the substrate and, accordingly, to the further death of insects. Shelter is optional, but not superfluous. For this, a birch trunk with rotten wood is suitable, where cockroaches will not only hide, but also use it as food.
Food - various fruits, vegetables, rotten plant organic matter (fallen leaves, rotten wood).
